Job Description

The Senior Health Coach is focused on workplace health and well-being services, and reports through UI Wellness/University Human Resources and will be a member of the liveWELL team focused on well-being of UI faculty and staff (). This position will have primary responsibility for well-being programs focused on providing a high-quality Health Coach service to UI employees with a high emphasis on our diverse campus and health care workforce. Health coaching includes working with employees on lifestyle modifications in areas of stress reduction, nutrition, physical activity, achieving a healthy weight, and tobacco cessation. Additionally, candidate will be comfortable educating work groups about healthy lifestyle behaviors that lead to improved health and contribute to a healthy campus culture.

A broad well-being background is needed for this position. Candidates considered for the Senior Health Coach level will have an advanced degree in a health-related field (for example, Master's in Public Health) plus experience educating individuals or groups on health and well-being lifestyle practices. The Health Coach level should have experience and/or education in well-being lifestyle practices but may not have an advanced degree. The ability to plan, implement, and evaluate various other behavior change interventions focused on primary prevention is required.

UI Wellness / University Human Resources intends to hire for one position at either the Health Coach classification or Senior Health Coach classification, based on the qualifications of the successful candidate. This position will be classified as a 3A or 4A position depending on candidate educational background and experience.

This position is eligible for hybrid work within Iowa and will require a work arrangement form to be completed upon the start of your employment. Per policy, work arrangements will be reviewed annually, and must comply with the remote work program and related policies and employee travel policy when working at a remote location .

Specific Job Duties and Tasks

  • Provide an effective health coaching process that focuses on individual behavior change using the Transtheoretical Model, Motivational Interviewing, and other coaching and behavior change theories.
  • Exercise independent and professional judgment in the coaching process for assessment, triage, behavior change program development, and referrals.
  • Expectation to coach independently with periodic random audits and client case reviews. Maintains confidentiality in accordance with established policies and legal requirements.
  • Develop content in a focal area through literature review and research and deliver to a variety of interested parties.
  • Evaluate program to determine effectiveness of program in meeting needs. Implement improvements based on user experience data, campus data, and evidence-based research and industry standards.
  • Measure quality and quantity of work for the purpose of improvement. May include surveys, focus groups and other data compilation and analysis.
  • Assure quality in program delivery through multiple modalities (in-person, online).
  • Knowledge and application of communication techniques and relationship building skills needed to work with a variety of individuals and groups in a constructive and collaborative manner.

Education Requirement

  • For the Health Coach level: A bachelor's degree in a relevant field such as health and human physiology, health promotion, public health, nursing, psychology, or the equivalent combination of education and experience required.
  • For the Senior Health Coach level: A master's degree in a relevant field.

Required Qualifications

  • Health Coach : 1-3 years of worksite health/well-being program experience.
  • Senior Health Coach : 3+ years of worksite health/well-being experience.
  • Extensive knowledge and experience demonstrated in creating and presenting health and well-being topics to a variety of audiences, using written, verbal, and electronic communication skills to deliver complex and sensitive messages, and commitment to working with individuals of various backgrounds.
  • The ability to, on occasion, work flexible hours outside of a standard 8 a.m. - 5 p.m. schedule, which may include evenings, as needed for the 24/7 workforce.

Desired Qualifications

  • Certification as a Health and Wellness Coach through a training program approved by the National Board for Health and Wellness Coaching or enrolled in a certification program at time of job application.
  • National Board-Certified Health and Wellness Coach (NBC-HWC) or willingness to obtain within one year of employment.
  • Certified Health Education Specialist or other wellness credentials, degrees, certifications.
  • Experience working in a clinical health care setting with skills translatable to health coaching.
