Purpose of Position
The medical coder understands and translates medical information and patient diagnoses into medical code using various classification systems. The medical coder will use proper coding to ensure accurate billing of claims.
Duties & Responsibilities
Coding healthcare claims
Review patient records to verify and audit diagnoses and procedure codes submitted by provider
Utilizes ICD-10 coding principles and coding guidelines to code visits, ensuring maximum reimbursement
Audit charges making sure proper billing procedures are followed.
Coding and entering charge information into database
Completing billing processes
Filing of insurance claims
Process and handle Insurance claims and referrals
Files, retrieves, and reviews Explanation of Benefits forms (EOB), remittances, correspondence, and claims. If there is a problem with payment decide what action should be taken, if to resubmit claim or bill patient
Collect all insurance information from the patient and correctly input insurance data into the computerDetermines and verifies appropriate demographics (obtain current information and validate): patient name (correct spelling of); date of birth; address; insurance coverage/information; financial class; and responsible party-guarantor in order to maximize timely reimbursement
Communicate with and establish positive relationships with internal and external customers to problem solve, explain policies and procedures, and explain financial processes (i.e., co-payments, referrals, address verification) to maximize timely reimbursement.
Assisting patients with questions regarding their accounts on insurance claims
Assesses accounts receivable to identify errors and determine appropriate method of problem resolution
Provide billing customer service in person, by phone or correspondence by analyzing and researching patients’ accounts to provide accurate, timely information and ensure resolution that meets federal, state and payer regulations.
Handle Worker’s Compensation claims
Provide courteous reception assistance to patients and other staff to promote and ensure customer satisfaction. Be an ambassador for the facility, appropriately representing the UND Center for Family Medicine and its counterparts
Required Competencies
Demonstrated comprehension of insurance claims processing, Estimate of Benefits forms (EOB), and denials.
Knowledge of medical office procedures, coding, and the ability to examine documents for accuracy and completeness.
Ability to process patient and public inquiries with poise and efficiency
Ability to recognize, evaluate and resolve problems and correct errors
Must have knowledge of registration procedures, extensive computer skills, basic knowledge of system applications, and billing systems
Maintains strict confidentiality in regard to all information acquired in course of performing the job
Must have excellent interpersonal skills, be detail oriented, and be able to multi-task, working on numerous projects simultaneously while meeting required completion deadlines
Minimum Requirements
Two years of college education in Business, Healthcare Management, Medical Billing or related field. Degree may be substituted with equivalent years of directly related experience
One year experience in medical office and/or medical billing setting
Must be able to become a Certified Professional Coder within six months of hire
Successful completion of a Criminal History Background Check
