Job Summary
The Chief Advancement Officer is the leader of the organization’s advancement functions including external affairs, development, marketing and communications and also oversees executive operations. The starting salary range for this role is $180,445-$222,902. This role is fully on-site based at the headquarters office with an anticipated start date of November 2024.

About the team
The Chief Advancement Officer is a crucial member of KIPP DC’s executive team and leads KIPP DC’s Advancement team. The executive team is a powerhouse of experienced and talented leaders who lead all functional areas across KIPP DC and set the vision and priorities for the organization. The Advancement team is the team responsible for pushing KIPP DC forward by fundraising, partnerships, marketing, communications and more - all through building strong relationships and unleashing joy. It is the spark that keeps KIPP DC’s engine running! On this team, the Chief Advancement Officer oversees the work of the development, communications, headquarters culture and operations and executive operations teams.
About the role
The Chief Advancement Officer is the leader of the organization’s advancement functions including development, marketing, communications and special events and also oversees executive operations and headquarters culture.
As an executive team member, this position must also ensure adherence to established internal control policies and procedures and maintain compliance within the organization.
This is a non-exempt position and will report to the President.
Location and Type of Work
As a headquarters team that is focused on being responsive to our schools and meeting the needs of our students and families, we approach our work in a way that reflects these priorities. Schools operate in person and our students and families rely on us for in-person support which requires this position to be fully on-site . This role is currently required to be on-site or in schools during regular work hours.
Responsibilities
- Lead the advancement team (20%) - Manage the advancement function by setting a strategic vision, developing team members and supporting them to achieve team goals, building trust and collaboration across the team, and inspiring innovation throughout all projects and initiatives, by:
- Setting annual advancement team goals aligned to vision, and leading the team in meeting those goals.
- Managing 4 direct reports who each lead distinct departments, including the brand team, development team, executive operations team, and culture & operations team.
- Providing and supporting professional development, feedback, coaching, and development plans for up to 15 advancement team members.
- Managing the advancement budget.
- Drive and oversee communication, brand, and marketing strategy (20%) - Manage the brand team to lead KIPP DC’s communications and marketing efforts, by:
- Planning external communications with families, community members, press, and citywide stakeholders.
- Planning internal communications, including proactive staff updates and announcements, reactive staff communications when issues arise, and community building communications.
- Leading crisis communications, media response, and reputation management in emergency situations.
- Planning staff events like annual kick-off, end of year celebrations, and more.
- Leading the annual engagement and development process of the school calendar.
- Drive and oversee KIPP DC’s development, fundraising and partnerships (20%) - In partnership with the KIPP DC Board of Directors and other senior leaders, develop and execute strategy to raise up to $10 million annually in private donations, competitive public grants, and federal/local funding for KIPP DC’s goals and priorities, by:
- Developing fundraising strategy, including working closely with the finance team and senior leaders on need and then developing the goals, stakeholders, and timelines for plans.
- Oversee team executing fundraising strategy, including annual campaigns, events, and donor stewardship.
- Proactively developing partnerships, relationships, and strategies to meet goals.
- Representing KIPP DC to key stakeholders and funders.
- Reporting on progress to the Board of Directors and internal stakeholders.
- Oversee culture and executive ops (20%) - Manage the team responsible for:
- Building and nurturing a strong, positive, and schools-focused culture at KIPP DC headquarters, including:
- Overseeing HDQ communications, including the weekly update and periodic meetings.
- Coordinating community-building events and leadership development opportunities.
- Managing the office operations and facility needs of approximately 180 central office-based employees.
- Managing cross-functional organizational projects such as large events, office moves, calendar development, leaders professional development, etc.
- Oversee strategic projects, cross-functional initiatives and board collaboration
- Scheduling, correspondence, preparation, and meeting follow up of executive leaders.
- Serve as member of KIPP DC’s executive team (10%)
- Set and drive toward organizational priorities and lead change
- Serve as a culture carrier and thought leader for the organization
- Collaborate within and across functional areas
- Serve as a key external representative of KIPP DC
- Share talent best practices and collaborate across a network of 20+ KIPP regions nation-wide
- Collaborate with the President to engage with and manage the board and ensure sound governance practices for the organization (10%)
Requirements & Preferences:
- At least 10 years of relevant experience such as development, fundraising, communications and/or marketing required
- At least 7 years experience managing people and teams required
- Experience leading fundraising campaigns with an annual target of at least $5 million required
- Experience managing communications and/or marketing required
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience in K-12 systems
- Experience managing executive operations
- Experience with board relations/governance
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to stand frequently
- Prolonged periods of sedentary work
- Flexibility to work outside normal business hours or weekends for KIPP DC events

- KIPP DC offers a robust benefits package including medical, dental, and vision insurances; various voluntary benefits; and employer paid benefits such as short term disability, long term disability, life insurance, and a membership to One Medical.
- KIPP DC also offers a 403(b) retirement account with a 3% employer contribution and a 3% match with vesting after three years.
- Currently, individuals in this role have up to 15 paid time off days, up to 10 paid sick days, and 12 paid holidays. This is subject to change and your exact schedule will be shared in your offer letter.
